$80m Mackay Northern Access upgrade to begin construction in 2018

The Australian Government is investing $9.2 million towards the Mackay Northern Access upgrade, a part of Queensland’s Bruce Highway.

The $80 million Mackay Northern Access upgrade is set to complete the freight link between the Bruce Highway and the Mackay Ring Road Stage 1 upgrade. This project is also expected to improve safety along the route as well as reduce travel times.

“This upgrade will see new lanes added along the 4.4 kilometres of the Bruce Highway and intersection upgrades to create safer overtaking opportunities and reduce the volume rear-end crashes in particular.

“The Mackay Northern Access upgrade is part of the $6.7 billion 10-year Bruce Highway Upgrade Program that is saving and improving lives on Queensland’s key north-south route,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said.

According to Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen, the upgrade will help enhance the link from the Mackay Ring Road to the Port of Mackay.

“Activities to be funded with this tranche of funding include tender evaluation and contract award, geotechnical investigations, detailed design work, public consultation, utility relocation and land acquisition,” Mr Christensen said.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, each contributing $64 million and $16 million respectively.

Tendering for the Mackay Northern Access upgrade is set for mid-2018, with construction expected to commence by late 2018.
