$210m worth of gas infrastructure projects in NT to create over 200 jobs

Two game-changing infrastructure projects worth $210 million have been approved for development by the Northern Territory Government. 

Not only will these projects help unlock the full potential of the Beetaloo Sub-basin, but they will also help drive economic growth, create more than 200 jobs, and deliver long-term prosperity for Territorians. 

With approval in place, APA Group will commence works on the Territory’s first-ever Beetaloo pipeline. This $70 million project will deliver the 37-kilometre Sturt Plateau Pipeline, which will connect Tamboran Resources’ Shenandoah South Project to the Amadeus Gas Pipeline – the backbone of the Territory’s gas network spanning from Alice Springs to Darwin. 

The new pipeline will pass through pastoral land, and it will be buried for its entire length other than surface facility locations ar each end of the pipeline. As a safety measure, surface markers will also be provided at certain locations to identify the presence of an underground pipeline, and these will be installed under the Stuart Highway to avoid traffic impacts. 

The Sturt Plateau Pipeline is designed to transport up to 50 terajoules (TJ) per day. 

“This is the action and discipline of the CLP Government delivering real results. In our first year, we put our heads down and focused on reducing crime and rebuilding the economy – and now we’re seeing this important resource finally moving after a decade of wasted time under Labor. 

“We have scrapped third-party merits review and ended the era of green lawfare, sending a clear message to industry that the Beetaloo is green-lit and moving forward. 

“This $210 million in private investment means 200 local jobs, new royalty streams, and the certainty that the NT is open for business. Make no mistake – the Northern Territory is ready to drive the nation’s energy future,” Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said. 

Meanwhile, Tamboran Resources has secured approval from Traditional Owners, the Northern Land Council and the Northern Territory Government to recover appraisal gas for sale from Exploration Permit 98 under the Petroleum Act 1984 (NT). This approval will pave the way for the construction of the $140 million Sturt Plateau Compression Facility. 

These two projects will establish the first clear pathway to market for Beetaloo gas. They will unlock royalties, power Territory homes and businesses, and cement the Northern Territory’s place as an energy powerhouse. 

The Department of Mining and Energy will be hosting Northern Australia’s premier mining industry conference this week, as part of the NT Resources Week Conference on 3-4 September in Darwin. 

This year’s program will bring together industry leaders, investors, policymakers and explorers to discuss the opportunities as well as challenges shaping the Territory’s resources future. 

Key themes during the conference will include: 

• Navigating the international landscape under the new Trump Administration, global tariffs, and shifting trade dynamics 

• Insights into the record gold price, the booming critical minerals sector, and the NT’s role in meeting global demand 

• Updates from major mines operating across the Territory 

• New exploration initiatives and project development in the Tennant Creek and Barkly regions 

• Company updates from leading exploration firms active across Northern Australia 

• Focus on regional accommodation projects and the potential upgrades to Tennant Creek Airport to support industry growth 

Tamboran Resources Chair and Interim CEO Dick Stoneburner will also be present at the conference to provide an update on the company’s development milestone.

“Ensuring Territorians are at the heart of these developments creates long-term economic and employment opportunities, while positioning the NT as a world-class energy hub,” Minister for Mining and Energy Gerard Maley said.
