Bipartisan support for Queensland's Cross River Rail project

Gina Theron   |   April 11, 2016

The Queensland Government has welcomed the bipartisan support from the Federal Government and Opposition in order to deliver Queensland's Cross River Rail project. Acting Premier, Jackie Trad said, "We want every level of government to have a seat at the table to support the delievery of this vital transport infrastructure and ensure the Cross River project is no longer hostage to political point scoring". With a goal of starting work as soon as possible, Building Queensland should finalise the business case by mid-year, and a finalised funding decision made thereafter.

Project:

The project will deliver a 10.2 kilometre rail link from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, including 5.9 kilometeres of tunneling under the Brisbane river and CBD. The rail will connect to both the northern and southern rail networks, benefiting all commuters from both directions. There is an expected increase in full time employment from 1.4 million to 2.2 million jobs by 2031, and this is likely to lead to 1.2 million public transport commutes into the Brisbane metro each day. In order to cater for this growth, a second rail river crossing will be developed to ease the congestion, improve network reliability and increase access to Brisbane CBD.

Services will be delivered to 5 key areas:

  • Boggo Road
  • Woolloongabba
  • Albert Street
  • Roma Street
  • Exhibition showgrounds

Completion date: Earliest delivery of core project 2020

Job creation:

A project such as this is estimated to create roughly 1600 jobs each year during construction. With the project forecasted to take approximately 5 years to complete, the project should create around 8,000 jobs.
