BMD secures $350m work contract on Adani Carmichael Rail project

Adani is progressing works on its Carmichael Rail Network as it awards a civil construction contract to BMD Group. The contract is valued at over $350 million and it is the largest construction contract awarded for the Carmichael Mine and Rail project in Queensland.

“Construction of Adani’s Carmichael Mine and Rail project is continuing with strict measures in place to manage the risk of the COVID-19 virus.

“We also understand how important it is to continue our operations where safe and practicable to provide certainty of employment for our staff, contractors and the thousands of people across north and central Queensland who indirectly rely on our project for their livelihoods,” Adani Mining CEO Lucas Dow said.

Under this civil works contract, BMD will be delivering earthworks, drainage, bridges, rail camp construction as well as associated road upgrades. Approximately 600 workers are expected to be employed to undertake these works.

“The majority of workforce will come from Rockhampton and Townsville, with the engagement of local suppliers and subcontractors also generating indirect employment through the supply chain and local community.

“Supporting employees and their families through secure employment is a priority for BMD and the Carmichael Rail Network project provides this security, as well as development and upskilling opportunities to our employees to progress their careers upon project completion,” BMD said in a statement.

The Carmichael Rail project will deliver a new 200-kilometre rail line that will connect the Carmichael Mine to the Abbot Point Port through an existing rail infrastructure.

The entire Carmichael Rail project will include the delivery of more than 460 culverts, 17 bridges over waterways, two road-over-rail bridges, 68 railway crossings and local road upgrades.

“Health and safety remains our first priority and we have adapted our operations in order to keep people in work and continue to provide new jobs opportunities. We remain on track to create more than 1,500 direct jobs during the construction and ramp up of our project and some further 6,750 indirect jobs,” Mr Dow said.

“At a time when jobs across the country are hard to come by, this project is generating much needed employment opportunities for locals and locally based suppliers in north and central Queensland,” BMD Group Executive DirectorOperations Scott Power said.

To date, Adani has awarded more than $1 billion worth of contracts for the development of the Carmichael Mine and Rail project. This includes the $100 million contract awarded to Martinus Rail for the delivery of tracks for the rail project; and the $40 million contract awarded to Decmil for the delivery of three temporary work camps.

In addition, Martinus Rail was awarded a second contract valued at $220 million earlier this year. You can read more about it here.
