The South Australian Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has awarded BMD Constructions the contract to deliver road resheeting upgrade works at Kangaroo Island.

A project management contract administration (PMCA) capacity has been awarded to BMD, which is the first time the department conducted this construction model with a civil contractor.

BMD will be upgrading existing roads at two major locations on Kangaroo Island – Rowland Hill Highway and North Coast Road.

Works on a 19-kilometre stretch of Rowland Hill Highway will include raising 93,000 tonnes of material from a local property’s borrow pit. This section is going to be used as a major freight route to Penneshaw – where Kangaroo Island’s ferry docks – once works are completed. 26 culverts will also be upgraded as part of the Rowland Hill Highway resheeting as well as realignment works on two intersections which will improve safety for all motorists.

On the other hand, a 5-kilometre section of North Coast Road – running west from Stokes Bay – will be upgraded and works will involve utilising 17,000 tonnes of pre-raised material during its construction. BMD is also going to upgrade six culverts as part of the project.

In a statement, the company said: “BMD is committed to supporting the communities in which we operate, and this project will see the engagement of local Kangaroo Island suppliers and subcontractors to complete the road upgrade works, aiding in the development of local industry and job creation for the community.”

The company added: “BMD is excited to have the opportunity to deliver another key infrastructure to beautiful Kangaroo Island, having recently completed the successful upgrade of the runway at Kangaroo Island (Kingscote) Airport.”

Construction is expected to commence in February 2018 and, weather permitting, be completed by late 2018.
