Brisbane's second largest demolition project underway for Cross River Rail
More works are underway to complete the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project in Queensland, with the beginning of demolition works on the Landcentre building and former South Brisbane Dental Hospital in Woolloongabba.
Demolition company DECC Pty Ltd has been appointed to undertake the preparation of the 16,000-SQM site where the future underground Woolloongabba Station will be located.
“The Landcentre will be Brisbane’s second largest demolition project in recent years following the removal of the old 16 storey Executive Building at 100 George Street as part of the Queen’s Wharf development.
“Upon completion of the $4.52 million job, the Landcentre, Hospital and Goprint sites will become the first full station site prepared and ready for Cross River Rail,” Acting Treasurer Steven Miles said.
Mr Miles added that this site is going to be the engine room of the project which will host the massive tunnel boring machines that will dig the twin 5.9-kilometre tunnels under Brisbane’s river and the CBD.

The new Cross River Rail Woolloongabba Station is also going to be located on this site, and the station is going to be built 27 metres below ground and will have 220-metre-long platforms. The station will allow commuters to travel between Woolloongabba and the city in just a few minutes.
“Cross River Rail will transform Woolloongabba linking commercial, residential and retail development with access to world class public transport and the famous Gabba sports stadium.
“It will generate 7,700 jobs including 450 apprentice and training opportunities during construction, and stimulate decades of economic development opportunities right across South East Queensland,” Mr Miles said.
The Cross River Rail is set to remove the bottleneck at the core of the region’s transport network and it will allow more trains to run along the route more often.
“Cross River Rail will enable a ‘turn-up-and-go’ transport system for the whole of South East Queensland,” Mr Miles said.
Heavy demolition activities on Landcentre and the old South Brisbane Dental Hospital are expected to commence in September and completed in early 2019.
Major construction works on site are projected to begin later in 2019, with the entire Cross River Rail project completed by 2024.
