A new major milestone has been reached that will progress the $386.5 million Great Eastern Highway Bypass Interchanges project – a project that will deliver a new free-flowing gateway into Perth’s eastern suburbs.

The Greater Connect consortium – a joint venture between Laing O’Rourke, AECOM and Arcadis – has been awarded the contract to deliver the congestion-busting project.

“This project is receiving $247.25 million of funding from the Morrison Government, part of our $110 billion, ten-year infrastructure pipeline.

“We are investing in critical infrastructure in Western Australia to lay the foundations for economic recovery on the other side of COVID-19 and this project forms part of that,” Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher MP said.

The project is expected to support up to 2,700 jobs and the procurement process for this development has been streamlined to help boost Western Australia’s economic recovery from the recent pandemic.

“Along with creating hundreds of jobs and supporting local businesses, the finished product will provide critical new connections for Perth’s transport network.

“This complements a range of other works underway in the area including the new interchange at Kalamunda Road and Roe Highway and upgrades to Tonkin Highway,” Minister for Transport and Planning Rita Saffioti MLA said.

Two new interchanges are going to be built along the Great Eastern Highway Bypass and the preliminary concept for this project includes:

  • Bridged interchange at Roe Highway and Great Eastern Highway Bypass
  • Bridged interchange at Great Eastern Highway Bypass and Abernethy Road
  • Upgrade of Great Eastern Highway Bypass between the new interchanges
  • Lloyd Street connection north of Great Eastern Highway Bypass
  • Upgrade of Roe Highway between Great Eastern Highway Bypass and Clayton Street
  • Upgrade sections of Abernethy Road
  • A new bridge over the Helena River, completing the extension of Lloyd Street from Clayton Street to Stirling Crescent
  • A shared path, including lighting and barriers
  • Converting Stirling Crescent into cul-de-sacs to the north and south of Great Eastern Highway Bypass, with local access via an extension of Adelaide Street to Abernethy Road

Early works on this project are anticipated to commence mid-2021 and will be completed by mid-2024, subject to environmental and statutory approvals.
