Construction is a step closer to commencing on the $83.5 million Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade in Melbourne’s west with the contract to deliver the project awarded to Symal.
This project will not only improve traffic flow and ease congestion, but it will also make it safer to drive, walk and cycle through Wyndham Vale.
The Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments, each contributing $41.75 million.
“This is another example of the Albanese and Allan Governments working together to deliver the infrastructure that Melbourne’s west needs and deserves.
“The Ballan Road upgrade will make it safer and easier for locals to get where they need to go while supporting hundreds of local jobs,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.
The upgrade will include removing one of Wyndham Vale’s busiest roundabouts and replacing it with new traffic lights at the intersection of Ballan, Greens and McGrath roads. Extra lanes will also be added to help improve travel time and journey reliability.
New traffic lights will also be installed at the intersection of Ballan Road and McGrath Road south near the 7-Eleven to make it safer and easier to turn right towards Werribee.

New pedestrian crossings and a bus priority lane on Ballan Road will be delivered as well to help improve public transport reliability while making it safer and easier to move between home, schools, services and local businesses.
In addition, about 800 metres of new walking and cycling paths will be constructed around the intersection to offer safer travel options for the community.
“We’re making it easier and safer for people in Melbourne’s west to get home sooner – replacing outdated roundabouts with modern intersections designed for growing communities.
“This is about delivering infrastructure people in our outer suburbs need and expect, improving safety, reducing congestion and supporting better connections across Wyndham Vale,” VIC Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.
Utility relocations and site establishment works will commence this month to prepare for major construction activities scheduled to begin in early 2026.
This project is also part of the State Government’s $767.55 million Road Blitz to get Families Home Sooner and Safer package and builds on other major investments in Melbourne’s west – including the soon to be completed West Gate Tunnel, the jointly funded Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade, Point Cook Road and Central Avenue upgrade, and Ison Road Overpass.
Approximately 1,620 jobs are set to be created through the delivery of the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade and the Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade.
“Ballan Road carried nearly 30,000 journeys each day, and locals will be thrilled to see works begin this year to deliver these new-look intersections.
“This upgrade will make it safer and smoother for people travelling to and from Werribee and Wyndham Vale,” Federal Member for Lalor Joanne Ryan said.
“We’re seeing big improvements right across the west – from the West Gate Tunnel to major local upgrades like this one.
“This project will make a real difference to how people move around Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes, Eagle Stadium and the wider Werribee area,” State Member for Werribee John Lister said.
