Upgrades to one of Melbourne’s busy arterial roads will soon get underway following the award of the contract to deliver the Northern Package for the Yan Yean Road Upgrade Stage 2 project.

Decmil – a subsidiary of Macmahon Holdings Limited – will be undertaking the Northern Package of works between Bridge Inn Road and Orchard Road, with major construction to commence in November of this year.

“We are very pleased to see Decmil’s Successful relationship with MRVP (Major Road Projects Victoria) continuing in Victoria. This builds on numerous recent civil contract wins that are contributing to our strong order book for FY26 and FY27,” Macmahon Holdings Limited Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Michael Finnegan said.

The second stage of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade will include:

  • Building a new lane in each direction between Kurrak and Bridge Inn roads
  • Replacing the roundabouts at Orchard and Bridge Inn roads with new traffic lights
  • Installing new traffic lights at North Oatlands Road, Bannons Lane, Jorgensen Avenue and Activity Way
  • Building new roundabouts at Heard Avenue and Youngs Road
  • Upgrading the signalised intersection at Ironbark Road
  • Installing new signalised pedestrian crossings south of Worns Lane and north of Youngs Road
  • Building new walking and cycling paths along both sides of Yan Yean Road

The project is being delivered in sections to allow construction to begin sooner. The Southern Package of works is expected to commence in mid-2026.

“Stage 2 of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade will ease congestion, improve safety, and connect local families to the places they need to go every day,” Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.

“The second stage of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade will deliver safer, faster and more reliable journeys for families across Melbourne’s growing north-east,” VIC Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.

Once complete, the Yan Yean Road Upgrade Stage 2 will help reduce congestion as well as improve safety and provide more reliable travel times for the 24,000 motorists who use this arterial road every day.

This project is part of a significant investment in road infrastructure across Melbourne’s north-east which will deliver new and upgraded lanes, intersections and shared paths – either completed or underway on Bridge Inn Road, Plenty Road, Epping Road, O’Herns Road, Childs Road and the M80 Ring Road.

Stage 2 of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments under the $3.14 billion Suburban Roads Upgrades – South Eastern Roads and Northern Roads.

The Federal Government has committed $1.58 billion towards this program of works, with the State Government investing $1.57 billion.

“We’ve seen great time-saving that the first stage of this project has delivered and it’s fantastic to see Stage 2 ready to commence in November,” Federal Member for McEwan Rob Mitchell said.

“Melbourne’s north-east is an up-and-coming destination for young families and professionals to live in and this upgrade will ensure they’re able to get from home, to work, to school and everywhere in between easier than ever,” VIC Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage said.
