Construction one step closer on new Sydney Fish Market

Construction is anticipated to commence next year on the new multi-million dollar Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay, with the final project design - done by Danish firm 3XN and Sydney-based BVN and Aspect Studios - revealed to the public.

“This brand new fish market will draw locals and visitors to Blackwattle Bay to experience the excitement of an authentic market and auction floor, and taste some of our finest seafood in state-of-the-art surrounds,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

The new purpose-built fish market is being delivered by UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation and it is going to be located on a site that is currently occupied by Hanson Cement adjacent the existing fish market.

The new fish market is set to be the centrepiece of a future harbour-side precinct - with views of the Anzac Bridge - that will cater to retail and wholesale trade. The building’s roof will feature a design inspired by fish scales.

Aside from the public market and auction house, the building is also going to be home to a number of restaurants and food kiosks as well as outdoor spaces, bars, and even an expanded seafood cooking school.

Other features of the development include new public wharves, a waterfront promenade, a ferry stop and new community and civic facilities.

“This will become a vibrant economic and community hub that supports NSW’s fresh seafood industry, our professional fishers and coastal fishing towns from Eden to Tweed Heads.

“Relocating the fish market to the new site will return Blackwattle Bay’s foreshore to the public, improve pedestrian and cycling links and connect more of Pyrmont to the water as part of the long-awaited revitalisation of the area,” Premier Berejiklian added.

With the new fish market to be built on an adjacent site, the existing Sydney Fish Market can continue to operate without being interrupted during construction - expected to begin in mid 2019.

The new Sydney Fish Market is projected to open and begin operations in 2023.
