Darwin CBD development to create 250 jobs for Northern Territory

Darwin’s old Cavenagh House building is going to be demolished and replaced with a striking “green” nine-storey tower that is going to be used as the new administrative headquarters for the Department of Health.

The proposed project will include features such as:

• Greening the exterior of Energy House and improving the building’s façade
• A child care centre on the ground floor
• A capital contribution to the City of Darwin to upgrade and green Litchfield Street
• A new 320 bay public car park in Litchfield Street – which will cost approximately $12 million

This development is expected to create 250 jobs during construction, according to Chief Minister Michael Gunner.

“This is an exciting development that will deliver 250 jobs for locals during construction, provide a cool, green facelift to the CBD and deliver a centralised, long-term workplace for many of Health’s corporate services staff.

“The project will see the old Cavenagh House building, on the corner of Cavenagh and Knuckey streets, demolished and replaced with a modern, nine-storey office tower. It will change this part of the city. 660 government staff will then be based there,” Mr Gunner said.

This project will be complementing the State Government’s efforts to reduce heat in Cavenagh Street as well as attract visitors and locals to the area.

After an extensive assessment process, Sandran Pty Ltd was selected as the preferred builder for the project. The company will be paying for the construction of the building, whereas the Northern Territory Government will be paying for lease once the building is completed.

Sandran is committed to utilising up to 95 per cent local suppliers and contractors for this project. The childcare centre and the car park will also be locally managed and operated.

“The architecture will be suited to Darwin’s tropical environment, featuring an internal atrium, high energy efficiency with a minimum 5-star rating, a rooftop garden and shading and greening at street level which will help reduce heat loads in this part of the CBD,” Mr Gunner said.

Works on the new building are expected to commence in early 2018, with completion set for 2021.
