Decmil Group further strengthens its relationship with Rio Tinto with a new contract award for the delivery of various facilities at the Mesa J iron ore project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

The $30 million contract will involve the design and construction of heavy vehicle and light vehicle facilities on site.

The facilities include:

  • A site laydown area
  • Heavy vehicle wash facility
  • Mobile equipment maintenance workshop
  • Bulk lube storage facility
  • Heavy vehicle and light vehicle tyre change facilities

Decmil will also be deconstructing the existing heavy vehicle wash facility and existing bulk lube storage facility at Mesa J as part of this contract award.

This new contract award is in addition to the $8.7 million contract awarded by Rio Tinto in October for the design and construction of a laboratory facility at the Mesa A project.

“We have now won two contracts with Rio Tinto in the space of a month.

“This validates our enhanced strategic focus on utilising our core capabilities to target a significant tender pipeline with blue chip customers in the resources sector,” Decmil CEO Dickie Dique said.

Works at Mesa J are expected to be completed by the end of 2021, while construction of the laboratory facility at Mesa A is set to commence in March 2021 and completed by August of the same year.

The Mesa A and Mesa J iron ore operations are part of the Robe Valley hub owned by the Robe River Joint Venture and operated by Rio Tinto.

Rio Tinto currently operates 16 mines as well as four independent port terminals, a 1,700-kilometre rail and associated infrastructure in the Pilbara. The 16 mines include Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Channar, Eastern Range, Marandoo, Brockman 2, Brockman 4, Nammuldi, Western Syncline, Silvergrass, West Angelas, Hope Downs 1, Hope Downs 4, Yandicoogina, Robe Valley (Mesa A) and Robe Valley (Mesa J).
