DECMIL wins contract for stage one of $139.4m Plenty Road Upgrade in VIC

Major construction works on the $139.4 million Plenty Road Upgrade in Victoria is set to commence in the coming weeks.

VicRoads has awarded DECMIL a $29 million contract for the design and construction of the first stage of the Plenty Road Upgrade – between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard in Mill Park.

This project will include:

  • Widening the road with a new lane in each road
  • Upgrading five major intersections, including Childs Road and Centenary Drive
  • Building safer lanes for cyclists
  • Installing safety barriers to improve safety for all road users

In order to reduce delays and improve access for locals, traffic lights are going to be installed at Rivergum Drive.

“We know how important traffic lights at Rivergum Drive are for the community. We’ve listened to their feedback and we’re helping ease congestion for tens of thousands of drivers who use this key route every day,” Member for Mill park Lily D’Ambrosio said.

Plenty Road is a major arterial route through some the region’s fastest growing suburbs and it also links the communities of Whittlesea, Doreen and Mernda to Melbourne.

Once completed, this project will improve traffic, mainly during the morning and afternoon peak. It will also improve access to schools, local businesses, shops and parklands.

“We’re investing in the local roads that people in Melbourne’s north rely on every day. Whether it’s Plenty Road, Yan Yean Road, O’Herns Road or the M80 Ring Road, we’re building the roads these growing communities need,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said.

Throughout construction, traffic management will be in place – including reduced speed limits, lane changes and detours for cyclists.

Major construction works are expected to begin the coming weeks after early works are completed. Early works include the design relocation of essential services – telephone, water and electricity.

Stage one of the project – between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard – is expected to be completed by early 2019. On the other hand, further planning for stage two – between Bush Boulevard and Bridge Inn Road – is already underway.
