Downer wins design and build contract for two train stations in VIC

Monica Gameng   |   April 12, 2018

Downer Group has been awarded the contract to undertake the design and construction of the Bendigo and Eaglehawk Stations in Victoria. Once the $15.8 million upgrade is completed, commuters will soon see safer and more accessible train stations.

The Bendigo Station upgrade will include:

  • A new pedestrian footbridge with lifts and stairs that will improve access between platforms
  • A new pedestrian footpath that will connect the station lane car park to the station with pram crossing and tactile ground surface indicators
  • Separate car park, bus interchange and taxi rank
  • A modern waiting area, toilets and staff amenities

Consultation with the City of Greater Bendigo will be conducted for the detailed design of the new bridge before major construction works begin later this year. The detailed design for the new bridge will acknowledge the Bendigo’s heritage, but it will not impact the operations of the Bendigo VRI Bowling Club adjacent to it.

“We have been working closely with the local community as we deliver these upgrades, which will improve safety and access for residents and visitors to our city,” Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said.

On the other hand, the Eaglehawk Station upgrade will include:

  • 100 metre platform extension and additional shelter
  • Upgrade works to the existing heritage listed platform to meet DDA standards
  • Rehabilitation of the existing heritage listed canopy
  • Improved station amenity and access for passengers
  • Upgrading the existing car park with taxi ranks with drop-off / pick-up zones
  • 60 new car parking spaces

“These upgrades will make it easier for locals to get where they need to go and help grow Bendigo’s economy even further,” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.

Both the Bendigo and Eaglehawk Station upgrades are in line with the city’s integrated strategy for transport and land use – Connecting Greater Bendigo, the Bendigo Station Improvement Plan and the Eaglehawk Station precinct Master Plan.

The upgrades to the two stations are expected to be completed in 2019.
