Early works are now underway on the $535 million Monash Medical Centre expansion in Melbourne’s south east.
Kane Constructions is undertaking the important expansion of one of Melbourne’s busiest hospitals.
Early works on the project will involve constructing a temporary ambulance parking and accessway as well as a new temporary drop-off zone for the Monash Children’s Hospital. These works will pave the way for main construction to commence next year.
“We are investing in local health infrastructure for the future – supporting our dedicated medical workforce to deliver the very best care for patients as Melbourne continues to grow,” Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne said.
“It’s so exciting to see a builder appointed to deliver the next phase of the Monash Medical Centre expansion – these early works will allow Monash Health to continue operating as major construction gets underway,” Member for Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos said.
The Monash Medical Centre expansion will include a new seven-storey medical tower above the newly expanded emergency department. This new building will ensure families across Melbourne’s south east will have access to world-class healthcare for generations to come.
The new medical tower will feature operating theatres with pre-operative and post-operative beds, and an intensive care unit. The tower will have capacity for 7,500 additional surgeries each year once it is operational.
The tower will also deliver expanded maternity services for local mums, with new and upgraded birthing suites and maternity beds to support about 2,400 births annually.
This more than half-a-billion-dollar project will also construct a new Central Sterile Services Department to improve the efficiency of processes that sees medical equipment delivered to the hospital’s dedicated doctors and nurses.
“The expanded emergency department and new operating theatres at the Monash Medical Centre will mean quicker care, closer to home for families in Melbourne’s south east,” Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas said.
“The new facilities of Monash Medical Centre will deliver more vital health care services – making it easier for local families to get the right care at the right time,” Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos said.
More than 1,500 construction jobs are expected to be created through this project. Additional medical jobs will also be supported once the newly expanded Monash Medical Centre is operational in 2029.
This project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Monash Health.
This project is part of the Hospital Infrastructure Delivery Fund, with over $1.6 billion invested to redevelop three of the State’s busiest metropolitan hospitals – including a $275 million upgrade at the Austin Hospital and a $813 million redevelopment at the Northern Hospital.
“The new facilities at the Monash Medical Centre will give our hardworking doctors, nurses and medical staff the world-class facilities and equipment they need to do what they do best,” Member for Clarinda Meng Heang Tak said.
“The massive $535 million expansion of the Monash Medical Centre will transform healthcare in the south eastern suburbs – bringing more world-class services closer to home for local families,” Member for Mulgrave Eden Foster said.
Australia is set to have its first man-made surf park in early 2019, with works due to begin on URBNSURF Melbourne located near the Melbourne Airport.
More than $1 billion worth of road and rail projects will be delivered as part of a winter blitz of works to help ease congestion as well as improve connectivity and create a safer transport network across Melbourne’s growing south east.
Following the release of the Business Case and announcement of a new station last month, works are now underway at Keilor East – the location of the new station – and this signals the beginning of a major program of initial and early works on the new Melbourne Airport rail line.
