Expressions of Interest called for new water park in Darwin NT

The Northern Territory Government’s planned international standard water park in Darwin marks a new milestone with the nomination of a preferred site and Expressions of Interest (EOI) called for its development.

According to Chief Minister Michael Gunner, the water park - which is part of a $100 million investment that will revitalise the Darwin CBD - is going to be a world-class attraction that will enable further private investment in the region as well as provide entertainment for locals.

The Local Government has engaged Pico Play to do a detailed business case for the project late last year, and it was identified that the project is commercially attractive for a private sector to develop, own and operate the water park.

The Stokes Hill Wharf area has been nominated as the preferred site for the new water park.

“Done well, an international standard water theme park will encourage tourists to visit the Territory and stay longer, as well as improve the liveability of Darwin for locals.

“The Darwin water theme park is another piece of our wider plans to boost our business and tourism assets while creating substantial employment opportunities for locals,” Mr Gunner said.

The planned development will include entertainment precincts, a public open space, recreational activities, accomodation options as well as food and retail outlets, and public walkways that will provide uninterrupted access to the foreshore.

The project will also include other unique offerings that the winning proponent will add to the development.

The State Government has invested $500,000 from Budget 2017 for the project feasibility study, and will be allocating an additional $1.7 million in the 2018/19 Budget to support the delivery of the project through a competitive process.

The EOI is going to be closed on 22 August 2018.
