EOIs called for WA's $86m Kalamunda Rd-Roe Highway intersection upgrade

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are being called for the design and construction of Perth’s Kalamunda Road - Roe Highway intersection in Maida Vale, marking a new milestone on the $86 million project.

According to Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher, upgrading the Roe Highway is vital to ensuring the efficient movement of goods around the city because the highway links to most of Perth’s important road corridors.

"This project is the latest in a series of Australian Government-funded initiatives to remove known pinch points on the Roe Highway following the successful delivery of Gateway WA, the Roe Highway and Berkshire Road interchange and the Roe Highway Upgrade project between Tonkin Highway and Orrong Road.

“We look forward to seeing this project supporting jobs and economic growth by improving this key route in Perth’s north-east in terms of travel times, traffic flows, freight productivity and reliability,” Mr Fletcher said.

This project will be removing the last remaining signalised intersections on the Roe Highway - between Midland and the Kwinana Freeway.

The upgrade will involve the construction of a grade-separated intersection at the Kalamunda Road - Roe Highway intersection. The project will also include a new bridge, two roundabouts as well as on and off ramps.

“Building a grade-separated interchange at this location, which features a higher than average incidence of rear-end and right-angle crashes, will improve safety by removing the potential for clashes between turning and through traffic,” Western Australia Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti said.

A shared path will be built on the eastern side of Roe Highway and on Kalamunda Road, and it will have local links for pedestrians and cyclists. To complete the upgrade, a new drainage, street lighting and other works to supplement the upgrade will also be done.

“The design has been developed in consultation with key stakeholders to minimise potential impacts on the surrounding area,” Federal Member for Hasluck Ken Wyatt said.

This upgrade project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments, each investing $68.8 million and $17.2 million respectively.

For interested parties, EOIs for this project can be submitted through Tenders WA.

Construction on the upgrade is expected to commence in 2019 and, weather permitting, be completed in 2020.
