Construction is now underway on Melbourne Airport’s $300 million Taxiway Zulu and Northern Access Route project which will reconfigure existing taxiways and apron layout, with Fulton Hogan undertaking the delivery of this project.

The Taxiway Zulu and Northern Access Route project is part of the airport’s broader Northern Precinct Program that will help enable future expansion works on the international terminal; improve aircraft movements in the northern precinct; as well as support operations of a future third runway.

“During construction of Taxiway Zulu, we aim to minimise the impact to Melbourne Airport operations, which is of fundamental importance and what we will be measured by. We thank Melbourne Airport for this opportunity to work together again and look forward to a great outcome,” Fulton Hogan Chief Executive Officer Duncan Gibb said.

Scope of works for Taxiway Zulu will include:

  • A new taxiway network in the Northern Precinct totalling 250,000-SQM of paved area
  • Master-grading of apron areas associated with T2 Gates expansion project
  • Associated services and utilities necessary to support development - including drainage and power

In addition, the delivery of the Northern Access Route project will pave the way for the construction of Taxiway Zulu as well as other future developments in the Northern Precinct. Scope of works under this project will include:

  • Road access network including interface with Sunbury Road and Oaklands Road roundabout
  • Contractor compound
  • External access point will be provided via Gate 3 - at Sunbury Road and Oakland Road roundabout
  • Associated services and utilities including stormwater diversions, fencing, signage, services relocations and infrastructure upgrades

“When completed, these new taxiways will mean better on time performance for flights, more space for international aircraft and access to new destinations - it’s all part of our vision to support Melbourne on its journey to become Australia’s biggest city,” Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation David Hall said.

Construction on Taxiway Zulu and Northern Access Route project is due for completion by September 2022.
