Project Spotlight: Great Northern Highway – Stage 2 of the Muchea to Wubin Upgrade

Monica Gameng   |   March 15, 2016

The Great Northern Highway’s Muchea to Wubin link is undergoing a major upgrade. A planning review for the project was completed in 2015 by Main Roads WA together with their industry partners, Jacobs and Arup. Construction works are set to start in 2016. This 4-year project will continuously open job opportunities for the industry starting with the construction of Miling Straight which is currently open for tender proposals until the 18th of March.

Project value: Current cost is $449.6 million

Funding breakdown:

  • Australian Government – $307.8 million + $23.88 million for the New Norcia bypass
  • State Government – $76.95 million + $5.93 million as supplement for the New Norcia bypass
  • Additional funding for New Norcia bypass - $29.8 million
  • Additional funding for other construction works are still subject for approval

The project: A comprehensive consultation process was conducted to help revise the upgrade strategy of the project. This process involved a series of public information sessions as well as a close consultation with heavy vehicle operators, industry bodies and the local government. The revised strategy for the highway upgrade will prioritise an array of construction packages which will be delivered starting 2016 to 2019.

Construction will include the following improvements:

  • Town bypasses
  • Road widening
  • Additional passing lanes
  • Flattened crests
  • Reduced curves
  • Safer roadsides
  • Improved rest area facilities with greater capacity

The table below highlights the different construction packages, timeframe and other information about the upgrade project.

Procurement for projects such as the Great Northern Highway upgrade is done by the State Government on behalf of the community. The local government ensures that any decision made for the project will deliver the best value for the taxpayer's dollar and that is why they have included the involvement of the local industry in their tender criteria.
