Major works have officially commenced to upgrade the Henderson Road and Ferntree Gully Road in Knoxfield, Victoria.
This $14.26 million project is fully funded by the Australian Government, and it will help improve safety, reduce congestion and make journeys more reliable for the 40,000 drivers who travel through this intersection each day.
The upgrade will include:
Not only will these improvements increase capacity, but they will also help ease congestion during peak periods, support growing traffic demands in the area, and improve safety for all road users.
Fulton Hogan is undertaking the works in partnership with Big Build Roads Victoria.
“Melbourne’s east is growing and we are investing in practical improvements to busy intersections like this one, so that people spend less time in traffic and more time at home, at work or with family.
“This upgrade will provide safer, smoother and more efficient journeys for the 40,000 vehicles that pass through here each day,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.

Temporary traffic changes will be in place while construction is carried out. There will be no access to St Laurent Rise from Ferntree Gully Road until mid-May and during this time, drives can access the estate via Kathryn Road or O’Connor Road, connecting through Laura Road, Rickards Avenue and Eden Grove.
Meanwhile, Ferntree Gully Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection, with reduced speed limits also in place.
From 8pm on 16 March until late April, Henderson Road and Harley Street will both be closed at Ferntree Gully Road. Detours will be established and motorists are advised to allow additional travel time to their journeys.
This project builds on the successful 2032 upgrade of the nearby Henderson Road and Kelletts Road intersection, which has significantly improved traffic flow, travel times and safety.
The Henderson Road and Ferntree Gully Road Intersection Upgrade is due to be completed in late 2026, weather permitting.
“The upgrade to the Henderson Road and Kelletts Road intersection in Rowville is already making a difference to peoples’ daily commutes.
“It’s great to see work now underway on this busy intersection that will deliver significant improvements to traffic flow, travel times and safer access in Knoxfield.
“I would like to thank the community for their patience while we deliver this important project,” Member for Aston Mary Doyle said.
