Kerman Contracting to build new facility at Koodaideri Project WA

Scott Technology Limited has awarded a contract to Kerman Contracting Pty Ltd to design and build a new automated iron ore sample processing laboratory facility at Rio Tinto’s Koodaideri Project in Western Australia.

“We are very pleased to be awarded the design and construction of the Koodaideri laboratory building.

“Over the last nine months Kerman and Scott have been working collaboratively on refining the scope and price. We are now looking forward to getting the project underway and establishing a long lasting business relationship with Scott,” Kerman Contracting Managing Director Chris Kerman said.

Kerman’s scope of works will include civil and concrete works as well as structural, hydraulic, electrical/communication works and fire protection. On the other hand, Scott will undertake the supply, installation and commissioning of robotics equipment.

Construction of the new facility will commence in the second quarter of this year and is due to be completed in February 2021.

The Koodaideri Project is located in the Pilbara region, about 110 kilometres from Newman. The project is comprised of a processing plant and associated infrastructure; a 166-kilometre rail line that will connect the mine to the existing Rio Tinto Pilbara rail network; an airport; support facilities; and an accommodation village.

Rio Tinto announced in 2018 that it will invest up to $3.5 billion towards the development of the Koodaideri Project, which is expected to create up to 2,000 jobs during construction and about 600 operational jobs.

The Koodaideri iron ore project is set to become Rio Tinto’s future major mining hub in the Pilbara, with an initial capacity of 43Mtpa.

The mine is anticipated to begin operations in 2021.
