Lendlease secures contract to build the $150m new QPAC theatre

Construction of a new theatre at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is one step closer to commencing with Lendlease officially appointed as managing contractor for the $150 million project.

In a statement, Arts Queensland said: “Lendlease has worked extensively with public sector clients on a diverse range of community infrastructure both in Queensland and nationally. Lendlease’s experience throughout the Queensland Cultural Centre include the State Library of Queensland expansion, construction of the Gallery of Modern Art and the refurbishment and new entrances to the Queensland Art Gallery.”

The multi-million dollar project will deliver a minimum 1,500-seat theatre that will be able to cater to the existing as well as growing producer and audience demands.

The concept design for the New Performing Arts Venue (NPAV) - released on May of this year, together with the announcement of Blight Rayner + Snohetta as principal consultant design team - features:

  • Two new studio spaces located below street level, visible from Russel Street and the main foyer
  • Transparent foyer spaces
  • A single balcony auditorium delivering enhanced audience sight lines

Preparatory work is expected to begin early next year, with major construction works set to commence by mid-2020.

The NPAV is anticipated to open its doors in 2022.

The Queensland Government has invested $125 million towards the delivery of the NPAV, while QPAC provided the remaining $25 million.
