Local businesses awarded contracts for works on $689m TAS hospital upgrade

Three sub-contracts have been awarded to local businesses for the $689 million Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Redevelopment project in Tasmania. Hazell Bros Group Pty Ltd, Howrah Plumbing Pty Ltd and Macquarie Builders Pty Ltd have been awarded a total of $7.1 million for works on the state’s largest construction project.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is dedicated to maximising the participation of local Tasmanian businesses and tradesmen in this project.

“This will help stimulate the local economy, secure jobs and encourage more in the sector,” Premier of Tasmania Will Hodgman said.

The three winning local businesses will be doing the following works for this project:

  • Hazell Bros - $4.6 million main demolition works
  • Howrah Plumbing - $1.9 million in-ground hydraulic and civil service works, including alterations and the diversion of existing in-ground sewerage and stormwater drains
  • Macquarie Builders - $600,000 building works to install a temporary hyperbaric chamber

The project’s Managing Contractor, John Holland Fairbrother Joint Venture tendered these works through the State Government’s Buy Local Policy which was implemented in this redevelopment project.

In the coming weeks, more sub-contracts are expected to be awarded as well as tenders to be announced. The Tasmanian Government is highly encouraging local businesses to register their interests to get involved in this project and they can do so on the ICN gateway.

Works on the new 10-storey building known as K-Block will commence later in the year.
