Major construction on the $560 million Fleurieu Connections Package in South Australia will soon begin as site preparation works ramp up towards completion.

Temporary barriers will be installed along Main South Road and Victor Harbor Road during this time and short-term closures along Main South Road as well as detours on Victor Harbor Road will be observed.

Once all preparation and early works are done, major construction to duplicate the Main South Road and Victor Harbor Road will commence.

The project is going to be delivered by the Fleurieu Connections Alliance – comprised of CPB Contractors, Aurecon and GHD – in association with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport. McMahon Services Australia and Tonkin have also been appointed as sub-alliance partners for this development.

The Fleurieu Connections Package will duplicate Main South Road between Seaford and Aldinga during the first stage and between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach during Stage 2. The package of works will also duplicate Victor Harbor Road between Main South Road and the McLaren Vale turn off.

The Main South Road Stage 1 will also include a grade separation (overpass) at the intersection of Tatachilla Road and Maslin Beach Road, a grade separation at the Port Road intersection as well as a grade separation and road alignment at the Main South Road and Aldinga Road intersection.

Other works include the construction of a Shared User Path for pedestrians and cyclists along the entire length of the upgrade with links to Aldinga and the Coast to Vines Rail Trail.

Stage 2 of the Main South Road project will involve the restoration of an additional lane. The concept design for this stage of works is currently being developed.

On the other hand, the Victor Harbor Road project will also deliver additional safety treatments along the route, including an overtaking lane at Hindmarsh Valley. A planning study investigating the preferred solution for Victor Harbor Road between Main Road, McLaren Vale and Tatachilla Road and to Willunga Hill will be undertaken for the second stage of the project.

The Fleurieu Connections Alliance will work closely with the local community in delivering this vital road improvement project that will help reduce travel times, improve safety and increase connectivity across the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Fleurieu Connections Package is anticipated to support 770 full-time jobs annually during its construction phase.

Project completion is expected in 2024.
