Majors Road Interchange Project in SA a step closer to being built

The Australian and South Australian Governments are pushing ahead with the delivery of the $120 million Majors Road Interchange Project that will improve access to the Southern Expressway. 

Community consultation is now underway to seek feedback for the design of the new on/off ramp, which will inform the final design that meets the community’s needs and expectations. 

“We are doing what we said we would and delivering on another Malinauskas Labor election promise, this time the much-needed new Majors Road interchange on the Southern Expressway. 

“Community consultation will be critical in the design process, and we look forward to engaging with local residents and businesses from this week,” SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis MP said. 

During the consultation period, information stalls at Happy Valley Shopping Centre (16 August), Hallett Cove Shopping Centre (17 August) and Reynella Bunnings (18 August) are put up and locals are encouraged to pay a visit and have their say about the project. An online survey is also going to be available until 7 September 2022. 

In addition, site investigation works including geotechnical and service investigations are being carried out to help inform the project design. 

“We are getting on with a project the people of the southern suburbs have been calling for. 

“This project will result in improved access to local facilities while also giving motorists better access to the Southern Expressway, easing congestion on the arterial roads as a result,” Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said. 

The Majors Road Interchange Project will deliver improved access to the Southern Expressway for commuters in the southern suburbs by providing better connections to Glenthorne National Park – Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility and Southern Soccer Facility from the Southern Expressway. 

Majors Road is a vital arterial road that provides a key connection between Lonsdale Road and Main South Road, carrying up to 13,200 vehicles a day. On the other hand, the Southern Expressway caters to approximately 74,000 vehicles daily between Darlington and the Reynella interchange, supporting economic activity in Adelaide’s southern commercial and industrial areas as well as facilitating tourist travel on the Fleurieu Peninsula. 

“More than 13,000 vehicles use Majors Road each day, and that number is expected to grow with the increasing popularity of facilities in the area. 

“Meanwhile, about 74,000 vehicles use the Southern Expressway between Darlington and the Reynella Interchange each day,” Federal Member for Kingston Amanda Rishworth MP said. 

The $120 million project is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments on a 50:50 basis. 

“We listened to the people of the Southern Suburbs and are delivering on an important piece of local road infrastructure that will make their everyday lives easier,” Federal Member for Boothby Louise Miller-Frost MP said. 

“We are committed to finalising the design for the project that will have little to no impact on nearby Glenthorne National Park while still providing benefits for commuters and the local community,” Member for Davenport Erin Thompson MP said.
