Mernda Rail Extension Project in Victoria seeks EOIs

Sophia Rostron   |   February 29, 2016

The Victorian Government has called for Expressions of Interest to design and construct the new rail line to Mernda, extending the South Morang train line in Melbourne's north. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) will manage the development and delivery of the project. LXRA will be working closely with PTV, the City of Whittlesea, the local members of Parliament and the local community to deliver this project.

The rail extension from South Morang to Mernda includes a premium station at Mernda, integrated with the proposed Mernda Town Centre, and a new station near Marymede Catholic College with extensive car parking, bike storage and bus facilities.

The rail extension will include:

  • Approximately 8 kilometres of new duplicated rail line between South Morang station and Mernda
  • Full grade separations, guaranteeing no new level crossings will be created
  • A new premium station in Mernda integrated into the proposed Mernda town centre
  • A new intermediate host station will also be constructed between South Morang and the new Mernda station. The location of this station will be determined with community input
  • Car parking and bicycle storage
  • Bus facilities
  • Construction of stabling facilities for three six-car train sets north of Bridge Inn Road, Mernda.

EOI and Tender Information

Expressions of Interest will be open for four weeks. The tender process will follow during 2016, with construction to begin in 2017 and be completed in 2019, creating hundreds of jobs during construction.

Early project design concepts will be available via the LXRA over the coming days or can be viewed by visiting community feedback sessions currently underway. See the Mernda Rail web page for details of the sessions and to have your say via the Social Pinpoint online consultation tool.

Marymede was chosen as the first station location due to its far greater car parking capacity, proximity to schools and local jobs, and because of the opportunities for value capture and partnership with the private sector.

However, given the strong community support for a third station, bidders will be required to investigate and price the proposed station near Hawkstowe Parade as part of the tender process.

The Level Crossing Removal Authority is delivering the project, which will include five grade separations, guaranteeing no new level crossings as part of the rail extension. Stabling facilities for trains north of Bridge Inn Road in Mernda will also be built as part of the project.
