More works to get underway on WA Lumsden Point development

The development of Lumsden Point in Western Australia continues to progress with more works set to get underway. 

In the coming months, more than 280 steel piles will be installed to form the base of the two new multi-user wharfs. 

The Landside Civils and Services contract has been awarded to Ertech Pty Ltd, and this contract will deliver earthworks, internal roads, sealing of the causeway and underground services – including power, water and communications – across the project. 

“Lumsden Point development is a game-changing development for Port Hedland and the Pilbara and will ensure we remain the nation’s economic engine room long into the future. 

“The start of piling and award of this major contract show real progress on the ground, further demonstrating Pilbara Ports commitment to building infrastructure that underpins future trade and sustainable development in the Pilbara,” State Member for Pilbara Kevin Michael said. 

The Lumsden Point development will help enhance the Port of Port Hedland’s export and import capabilities, including the export of battery metals and minerals as well as the import of renewable energy infrastructure. 

Imports through Lumsden Point are anticipated to commence in mid-2026. 

“The Cook Government is thrilled to see the latest milestone achieved at Lumsden Point in the Port of Port Hedland. 

“This progress reflects our commitment to boosting infrastructure and driving economic growth in the Pilbara region. 

“Lumsden Point will create hundreds of jobs, diversify our exports and ensure Western Australia is ready to meet the global demand for critical minerals and renewable energy infrastructure,” WA Ports Minister Stephen Dawson said. 

This project will support the growth of direct trade to the Pilbara as a major creator of jobs and economic opportunities. 

The Australian Government has committed $565 million to upgrade common user port facilities in the Pilbara, with $450 million of this investment supporting Lumsden Point in partnership with the Western Australian Government who has allocated $96.6 million to the project. 

“Lumsden Point is now closer than ever to strengthening regional supply chains, boosting export capacity and delivering lasting benefits for local communities in the Pilbara. 

“The development will benefit businesses and communities and will transform Port Hedland into a more efficient, sustainable and diversified port. 

“Our support is unlocking significant economic opportunities in the region and driving the growth of renewable energy,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.
