New $50m Hume Freeway upgrade announced for VIC

A new diamond interchange at the intersection of Watson Street is going to be built as part of a congestion-busting $50 million Hume Freeway upgrade in Victoria, which will be delivered through the Urban Congestion Fund project.

This announcement follows crucial funding that was invested by the Australian Government that will fully-fund this Hume Freeway project.

“Motorists across Wallan will have a shorter, direct route between the Hume Freeway and the entire area.

“It means direct access to new precincts including planned community health centres and upgraded ambulance services.

“It will also significantly improve safety for locals getting onto the freeway,” Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.

Benefits of this congestion-busting project is expected to extend to motorists beyond the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

“This project will mean families across this area will be getting home sooner and safer.

“Residents should expect to see a reduction in traffic congestion around the Hume Freeway for northbound vehicles exiting the freeway in peak travel times,” Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum said.

This multi-million project will be delivering new south-oriented ramps from Watson Street onto Hume Freeway. This will enable for direct freeway access as well as less traffic through the Wallan town centre for those travelling towards Melbourne.

The announcement of this new congestion-busting project has been welcomed by the Mitchell Shire Council as well.

“This is a significant announcement for the Wallan community and our shire. The completion of the diamond interchange on the Hume Freeway, Wallan, will unlock greater movement through our shire.

“This announcement is a real economic boost to the region and will assist greatly in our recovery efforts as we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is fantastic news that will be welcomed across the shire,” Mayor David Lowe said.
