New Sydney Fish Market secures $750m development funding

The New South Wales Government has injected $750 million in funding for the development of a new Sydney Fish Market that will include relocating markets to the head of Blackwattle Bay from the market’s current site at Pyrmont.

“This redevelopment is going to completely change this part of Blackwattle Bay [and] this part of the CBD and we are really excited by what it means.

“It is a significant investment, but well worth it,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

Subject to planning approval and contract awards, early works on the project are expected to commence in late 2020 and the new fish market is due to open in 2024.

This project is set to be delivered through two work packages - one for the demolition of the wharves and site preparation, and another for the construction of new facilities. Development applications for the work packages are set to open for submissions soon.

The new Sydney Fish Market is designed by Danish architects 3XN together with BVN and Aspect Studios. The new fish market will feature public promenades, a ferry wharf as well as a new large public open space.

“One in five international tourists to Sydney visit the existing Fish Markets.

“In addition to the clear benefits for Pyrmont, the new market will be a boon for regional communities as a showcase for the very best seafood from along the NSW coast,” Premier Berejiklian said.

A decision is yet to be made regarding the redevelopment of the existing Fish Market site.
