Planning is now underway for the High Street Road and Mowbray Drive intersection upgrade in Wantirna South, Victoria to improve safety and reduce travel times. This project is part of the Suburban Road Blitz that will deliver safer, more efficient roads across Melbourne.
Options for the upgrade are being investigated, including:
The community is called to have their say on safety, traffic flow, and other considerations for the upgrade. Feedback gathered will be used to help shape planning for the upgrade as well as early design work, traffic analysis and onsite investigations to ensure the intersection upgrade delivers the best possible outcome for the Wantirna South community.
“This planning work is about carefully considering Victoria’s future infrastructure needs, to support growing communities, improve safety and keep people moving more efficiently,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.
“Planning for upgrades at busy intersections like High Street Road and Mowbray Drive is critical to improving safety and reducing the risk of crashes for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians,” VIC Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said.
“Listening to the community is essential to getting this project right and ensuring the future upgrade reflects how locals move through and rely on this key intersection,” VIC Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region Lee Tarlamis said.

Feedback can be provided through an online survey on Engage Victoria until 8 March 2026. The project team will also be at Knox Gardens Community Hall (56 Argyle Way, Wantirna South) on 28 February 2026 from 10am to 3pm for a drop-in session where the community can provide feedback or ask questions about the project.
Initial planning work is expected to be completed in late 2026. Planning works will be used to inform government decisions on future project funding.
This project is part of the $1.2 billion Road Blitz, which is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments – each contributing $1 billion and $200 million respectively.
“This intersection is used every day by local families, workers and small businesses, and this planning work is an important step toward safer and more reliable journeys in Wantirna South,” Federal Member for Aston Mary Doyle said.
“This project is about planning ahead for the future of Wantirna South, easing congestion and improving safety as traffic volumes continue to grow across Melbourne’s east,” VIC Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region Michael Galea said.
