Plans revealed to revamp Adelaide Street for Brisbane Metro project
Plans have been released by the Brisbane City Council for the transformation of Adelaide Street into a future transit boulevard that will also feature an underground tunnel for Brisbane Metro.
As the Brisbane Metro tunnel connecting North Quay to the King George bus station gets underway, locals will be seeing a significant change to Adelaide Street with plans of a total overhaul to coincide with the Brisbane Metro project.
“As part of this, the King George Square Station will be a new front door for many commuters coming into the city, [and] we’re going to make sure that is a world-class arrival experience in Adelaide Street and a much more pleasant environment, a safer environment, for pedestrians as well,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.
As Brisbane Metro is completed, Adelaide Street will have 50 less buses during peak times as they go underground together with Metro vehicles.
This vision is aimed at decluttering Adelaide Street from existing infrastructure such as the numerous bus stops along this street.

A 30 per cent increase in visitations to Brisbane is forecasted for next year, mostly from locals and a portion from international visitors.
The goal of this transformational project is to turn Adelaide Street into a world-class entry to the city of Brisbane with a focus on amenity and pedestrian safety by widening footpaths and improving street crossings.
With construction on the Brisbane Metro tunnel beginning next year, the Brisbane City Council will try to minimise the impact of construction on street users. Currently, the council is awaiting final approval from the Queensland Government before works can begin on the $944 million Brisbane Metro project.
“Just in recent days we had a really constructive meeting with the state government talking about the way forward,” Mr Schrinner said.
