The Victorian State Government has announced an Alliance of Laing O'Rourke, Fulton Hogan and Jacobs has been chosen as the preferred bidder for a $500 million package of works in Melbourne, including the duplication of the Hurstbridge line, construction of a new Rosanna station, and removing level crossings at Lower Plenty and Grange Roads.

Packaging these critical works together will reduce disruption to local residents, businesses and passengers, and mean the benefits of this huge project can be delivered sooner. The fast-tracking of the two level crossings will also mean that the removal of 25 level crossings will be completed by the end of 2019.

In a Government statement, Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan affirmed "the level crossings at Rosanna and Alphington are among the worst in Melbourne, clogging up roads in the north eastern suburbs - that's why we're getting rid of them."

The winning consortium will now work the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) to "continue community consultation, and utilise their experience to further develop the design options at these sites."

The Victorian State Budget invested $140.2 million for the upgrade of the Hurstbridge Rail line

In terms of the project delivery timeline, the package of works went out to market in June 2016. construction on the Hurstbridge line projects will commence in early 2017, and end in 2019.
