Proposals requested for $50 million Wanneroo Road interchange

Invitations for the proposals of the design and build of the $50 million Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive interchange have been sent to four main contractors.

Construction is set to begin mid-year with the project comprising the build of a grade-separated interchange, with Joondalup Drive passing over Wanneroo Road via two lanes in each direction.

According to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, BMD Constructions, Georgiou Group, CPB Contractors and Cut & Fill, which back in 2015 was bought by Decmil Group, have been invited to bid on the project after a six-week expression of interest period.

“Reducing congestion in Perth’s northern suburbs is a key objective of the $2.3 billion road and rail infrastructure package, jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian government,” Ms Saffioti said.

“This project builds upon the successful opening of the Mitchell Freeway extension between Burns Beach Road and Hester Avenue in August 2017.”

Christian Porter, Federal Member for Pearce, said the project along with other significant upgrades in the area will reduce travel times on the Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive.

“The Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive interchange is one of three major upgrades in Perth’s northern corridor over the coming years, along with widening of Wanneroo Road between Joondalup Drive and Flynn Drive, and an upgrade of the Wanneroo Road and the Ocean Reef Road Interchange,” Mr Porter said.

“Upon completion, these complementary project will remove bottlenecks from Wanneroo Road, leading to safer and more efficient journeys around our suburbs.”

$40 million has been contributed to the project by the Federal Government with the State Government set to provide $10 million.

The contract is set to be awarded in May with construction works set to begin in the middle of the year.
