Stage 1B of the Beams Road Upgrade between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road in Fitzgibbon, Queensland has reached the halfway point of construction and is on track to be completed later this year.
The upgrade will help improve traffic flow on this key arterial route used by up to 20,000 vehicles daily while delivering safer and more connected routes for pedestrians and cyclists.
“Reaching the halfway mark on the Beams Road upgrade is an exciting milestone for this project that will improve safety, boost capacity and ease congestion for Brisbane’s northside.
“Alongside other major road projects across Brisbane, this upgrade is improving connectivity, reducing congestion and supporting the city’s continued growth,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.
“We’re delivering a major upgrade for Brisbane’s north, with the Beams Road project now halfway complete.
“We want to help people get around our city sooner and safer which is why we’re building better roads like Beams Road to keep Brisbane moving,” Lord Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner said.
Over recent months, works carried out focused on major underground drainage and service relocations.
The overall Stage 1B project includes:
“Northsiders know the Beams Road corridor is one of the busiest roads in our part of the world.
“Alongside the new Beams Road overpass, this road project will deliver greatly improved traffic flow and better connectivity for motorists and other road users,” Member for Lilley Anika Wells said.
Works to widen the Cabbage Tree Creek crossing is now complete, and it will support four lanes of traffic as well as address a known pinch point along the corridor.
A large crane with a 500-tonne lifting capacity was utilised to install precast culverts that will carry the additional lanes across the creek.
Meanwhile, the new shared path and pedestrian underpass at Cabbage Cree Creek will provide a safer, separated crossing for pedestrians and cyclists while also linking directly into the Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway.
“Once works are complete in late 2026, motorists can expect smoother and more reliable journeys, improved safety for all road users and better connections across Brisbane’s growing northern suburbs.
“The upgrade will also support continued growth in Carseldine and Fitzgibbon by delivering infrastructure designed to meet future demand,” Member for Petrie Emma Comer said.
The first stage of the Beams Road Upgrade – between Lacey Road and Balcara Avenue – was completed in early 2025 and it included new traffic signals at Dorville Road, widened road sections and improved shared path connections.
The Beams Road Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian Government, committing $50 million, and Brisbane City Council under its Better Roads for Brisbane program.
“This major upgrade is great news for our local community, helping ease congestion and making everyday trips quicker and less stressful for residents.
“It’s fantastic to see this project taking shape, with real progress being made to support our growing community and keep Brisbane moving for years to come,” Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor Sandy Landers said.
