QLD's $1.1bn Herston Quarter redevelopment one step closer to construction

The billion dollar Herston Quarter redevelopment in Queensland is one step closer to construction, with the approval of a $347 million specialist rehabilitation and ambulatory care centre (SRACC).

The centre is a vital inclusion to the inner-north Herston precinct and it will provide specialised care for long-stay acute rehabilitation patients. The SRACC is going to be operated by Metro North Hospital and Health Service, and it will showcase Brisbane as a world-class health care, research and knowledge destination.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said that this care centre is a priority in the redevelopment of the precinct.

“Development of the $1.1 billion Herston Quarter facility is expected to support about 700 jobs annually over the life of the project.

“The specialist rehabilitation care centre is the first significant construction to commence which is an important reassurance to the community that this site will continue to provide public health services into the future,” Mr Dick said.

Aside from the SRACC, the Herston Quarter redevelopment project will also include a private hospital, aged-care and retirement living as well as student and residential accommodation, public and private child care facilities, retail and commercial spaces, and public realm works which are designed to improve the connectivity between Herston Quarter and the wider Herston Health Precinct.

The entire project is being developed by Australian Unity and was designed by Hassell. In early 2017, Watpac Limited was awarded a $325 million contract to deliver the SRACC as well as other works for the project.

Construction on the SRACC is expected to commence in March 2018 and be completed by the end of 2020.
