Early works have commenced on the redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf 6 in Hobart, marking a major milestone in TasPorts’ largest infrastructure project.
The redevelopment of Wharf 6 will modernise wharf infrastructure to improve efficiency, safety and sustainability with the addition of shore-power, and it will provide dedicated berthing for the RSV Nuyina and a marine base for Australia’s Antarctic program.
This project is the first stage of the broader Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment Project, which will support Antarctic exploration as well as scientific research, trade, export and global cruise tourism while boosting the State’s economy and making it a leader in sustainable port operations.
“Antarctic and Southern Ocean science has never been more important, and the redeveloped wharf will support the Australian Antarctic Program to continue its critical work.
“This project secures Tasmania’s role as the gateway to East Antarctica and provides a permanent home tailored to the Nuyina – Australia’s world-class scientific and icebreaking ship,” Federal Minister for the Environment and Water Murray Watt said.
“The start of works on the first stage of the Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment Project is an important step forward for this nationally significant project.
“It means jobs on the ground, local industry involved, and real progress on infrastructure that will benefit Tasmania’s economy for decades to come,” TAS Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kerry Vincent said.
The Macquarie Wharf 6 redevelopment is on track for practical completion by August 2028.
A joint venture between Hazell Bros Group and Brady Marine & Civil was awarded the contract to undertake the redevelopment of Wharf 6 in December 2025.
A project team of highly skilled professionals has already been assembled to deliver this transformative project alongside TasPorts.
“Detailed design is now underway with site investigations, including geo-technical surveys scheduled ahead of demolition in the coming months.
“We’re proud to be partnering with the Australian Antarctic Division and Hazell Brady to deliver infrastructure of national significance that will support Antarctic research, trade and one of Tasmania’s key working ports for decades to come,” TasPorts’ Group Executive Major Projects, Assets and Technical Services Michel de Vos said.
The Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment Project, underpinned by a $188 million investment from the Australian Government, is being delivered in stages to help maintain critical port operations.
The second stage of the project will see the redevelopment of wharves 4 and 5, expanding Tasmania’s export and cruise capacity.
