The North East Link Project is moving into the next tendering stage, with interested parties now invited to participate in the Registration of Interest (ROI) as well as attend an industry briefing session and gain access to the Industry Briefing Electronic Data Room for the Freeway Packages – North Package and South Package.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be announced through the Buying for Victoria website in the fourth quarter of 2021.

For more information on how to register and participate, you can access the Advance Tender Notice here.

The Northern Package will be upgrading the M80 Ring Road between Plenty Road and the Greensborough bypass to Somers Avenue. Scope of works under this package include:

  • A new interchange at Greensborough bypass
  • A new interchange at Grimshaw Street
  • Maintaining toll-free northbound and southbound access between Watsonia, Elder Street and Grimshaw Street
  • Reconfiguring the Watsonia precinct
  • Civil infrastructure, noise walls and urban design features
  • New and upgraded cycling infrastructure

On the other hand, the Southern Package will widen the Eastern Freeway between Hoddle Street in the west and EastLink in the east. Scope of works under this package include:

  • An interchange with the Primary Package that includes the twin tunnels
  • A full freeway to freeway interchange with the Eastern Freeway
  • Additional lanes to the Eastern Freeway, including express lanes
  • Construction of the Doncaster Busway along the Eastern Freeway
  • Civil infrastructure, noise walls and urban design features
  • New and upgraded cycling infrastructure

The North East Link Project is Victoria’s largest road project to date and it will link the M80 Ring Road to an upgraded Eastern Freeway.

Once open to traffic, North East Link will reduce travel times between Melbourne’s north and south east by approximately 35 minutes and will remove around 15,000 trucks from local roads each day.

The entire development is estimated to cost around $16 billion and will create up to 10,000 jobs during its construction.

In June, the preferred contractor to undertake the tunnelling package was announced. You can read more about it here.

Works on the tunnelling package is expected to begin following the award of the contract later this year.
