Roadworks begin on $2bn Carmichael coal project in QLD

Roadworks are now underway as part of Adani’s $2 billion Carmichael coal mine and rail project in Central Queensland’s Galilee Basin, west of Mackay.

The works are being carried out by a regional Queensland business under legal approvals that Adani has received for the Carmichael project.

Works on the Carmichael mine access road will include the delivery of grid bypasses that will enable larger equipment and machinery to be transported to the mine site.

“The road upgrades are an important step to prepare for the construction of the Carmichael Project to ensure larger equipment can be transported to site, and the infrastructure meets future demand for increased traffic,” Adani Mining CEO Lucas Dow said.

In November 2018, Adani announced that the company will be fully funding the multi-billion dollar project. The company has also announced that it has scaled back the size of the project.

The reduced project size will now comprise of a smaller open-cut mine that will be able to produce an initial 10Mtpa of coal as well as other infrastructure that will support the mine. Over a period of 10 years, Adani is planning to increase production at the mine to up to 27.5Mtpa.

In December 2018, Adani released to market a number of Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for various jobs for the Carmichael project.

The Carmichael coal mine and rail project is expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs during its construction, supporting thousands of indirect jobs as well.

Currently, Adani has already appointed various contractors and suppliers to help deliver the project, including two Wangan and Jagalingou-certified businesses.
