Thiess’ contract with Glencore for mining services at the Mount Owen coal mine has been amended to have an increase in value by $140 million.

The CIMIC Group member has been operating at Mount Owen since 1994 under successive contracts.

“We have a proud history at Mt Owen dating back to 1994 when Thiess first built the mine. Today we continue to provide world-class services focused on safe and productive mining,” Thiess Managing Director Douglas Thompson said.

Mount Owen – located in the Hunter Valley – is Thiess’ largest coal mining operation in New South Wales. The new variation to the company’s contract will get them to mine additional volumes which follows a new Development Consent that was acquired by Glencore.

Thiess will also continue to provide mine planning, design and execution as well as drill and blast, overburden removal, and coal mining services at Mount Owen until 2021.

CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Michael Wright said: “This award reinforces Thiess’ long-term commitment to delivering value-add solutions to Glencore at Mount Owen, and further reinforces Thiess’ strong presence in the Hunter Valley where we provide mining services at three mines.”

Earlier this month, Thiess has also secured a $190 million contract extension at Dawson South mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin as well as a $185 million contract for Mount Arthur coal operation in the Hunter Valley.
