Upgrades proposed for NT Roger Vale Drive & Stuart Hwy intersection

Safety upgrades are being proposed on the Roger Vale Drive and Stuart Highway intersection, south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, and the Territory Labor Government is now undertaking a planning study for the project.

The existing intersection is a high-speed un-signalised section of road where motorists on the Stuart Highway have to yield to traffic coming from Roger Vale Drive. Due to delays in long queues during peak times and major events, drivers might experience high risk behaviours that can cause accidents.

The proposed upgrade will realign the intersection to improve traffic flow and safety while supporting planned future development and land use plans for Alice Springs south.

The intersection is part of a busy section of the Stuart Highway that provides access into the Alice Springs Airport as well as the nearby motorsports complex, the Welcome to Alice Springs signage and communities such as Santa Teresa and Titjikala.

SMEC Australia has been engaged to undertake design works that will ultimately improve traffic flow at the intersection and allow for safer turns in the area.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback on the upgrade's draft concept, which will be used to inform the project's final design. Interested parties can have their say on the draft concept until 5 July 2024.

“The Territory Labor Government is investing in our road infrastructure, ensuring it is safe and fit for purpose.

“I encourage all stakeholders and the Alice Springs community to provide feedback to ensure we address safety and congestion issues in the area and make this intersection safer for all motorists.

“This project will develop a design that meets the needs of future development plans and addresses current safety and access issues at the Stuart Highway and Roger Vale Drive intersection, the motorsports access and the Welcome to Alice Springs tourist feature,” Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Joel Bowden said.
