VIC's $2.2bn Northern and South Eastern Road Upgrades mark new milestone

A new major milestone has been reached on the $2.2 billion Northern and South Eastern Upgrades with the release of the Request for Proposal (RFP) urging shortlisted builders to respond and send in their plans for the upgrades by mid-2019.

Three shortlisted consortia were announced in October 2018 and it includes Access Arterial, Connecting Melbourne and Netflow.

This $2.2 billion package of works is part of the Suburban Roads Upgrade and it is comprised of 12 road upgrade projects across the northern and south eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

In addition, locals have helped shape the proposed designs for the 12 upgrades by submitting more than 2,500 community feedback. The feedback from locals will help refine the design of the projects to ensure that they meet the needs of the people who use the roads each day.

“Locals who have spent years grappling with bad traffic in Melbourne’s north and south eastern suburbs have helped to shape better and safer roads, with extra lanes and intersection improvements,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said.

Works on the Northern Roads Upgrade will include:

  • An additional lane in each direction to Childs Road in Mill Park between Beaumont Crescent and Prince of Wales Avenue, with a new bridge over Darebin Creek

  • An additional lane in each direction to Sunbury Road in Sunbury between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, with a new bridge over Jacksons Creek

  • An additional lane in each direction to Epping Road in Epping between Craigieburn Road East and Memorial Avenue

  • An additional lane in each direction to Bridge Inn Road in Doreen between Plenty Road and Yan Yean Road, with a new bridge over Plenty River

  • An additional lane in each direction along Craigieburn Road in Craigieburn between Mickleham Road and the Hume Highway

  • Intersection upgrades along Fitzsimons Lane in Templestowe and Eltham, and installation of traffic lights to Leane Drive and Main Road in Eltham

On the other hand, works on the South Eastern Roads Upgrade will include:

  • An additional lane in each direction to Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road in Pakenham South between Princes Freeway and Manks Road, with a new bridge over Deep Creek

  • An additional lane in each direction to Lathams Road in Seaford between Oliphant Way and Dandenong-Frankston Road, with a new bridge over the Peninsula Link

  • An additional lane in each direction to Hallam North Road in Endeavour Hills between Heatherton Road and James Cook Drive

  • An additional lane in each direction to Pound Road West and Remington Drive in Dandenong South between Abbotts Road and South Gippsland Highway, with a new bridge over the Cranbourne train line

  • Upgrading of Golf Links and Grants Road in Langwarrin South as well as the six-way roundabout at Gold Links, Grant, Warrandyte and Baxter-Tooradin Roads

Construction on both the Northern and South Eastern Upgrades is anticipated to begin in 2020 and completed by the end of 2025.

The Suburban Roads Upgrade is a $4 billion package of works that will improve road conditions in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Delivery of the first part of the Suburban Roads Upgrade - the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade - is well underway and eight major upgrades between Altona North and Tarneit are being constructed.

“These vital upgrades in Melbourne’s outer suburbs will slash congestion, improve traffic flow and boost access for hundreds of thousands of drivers every day, while making these busy roads safer for all road users,” Ms Allan said.
