VIC's $711m Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2 nears construction

Following the announcement of the shortlisted contractors to build the $711 million Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2, LendLease Engineering, CPB Contractors and John Holland Pty Ltd are now requested to submit tenders for congestion-busting project.

With the tender process now underway, major construction on the upgrade that will ease congestion on one of Melbourne’s busiest freeways is set to commence next year.

“Drivers across Melbourne’s south east will experience better travel times when this project is delivered - that’s why we’re getting on with the work which will allow major construction to get underway,” Minister for Cities, urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said.

The second stage of the Monash Freeway Upgrade will include adding 36 kilometres of new lanes between Warrigal Road and Eastlink as well as from Clyde Road to Cardinia Road.

Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said that this project will help motorists get to their destinations quicker.

“By adding extra lanes where they’re needed most, drivers will save nine minutes off a peak hour trip between Pakenham and the city,” Mr Donnellan said.

To enhance road safety for drivers, a new intelligent on-road technology is going to be installed along the Monash Freeway.

Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said: “Smart, on-road technology will be installed from the South Gippsland Freeway to the Beaconsfield Interchange, giving drivers live traffic information and better lane management during incidents to ensure safe and reliable journeys.”

“The project includes the upgrade of the Beaconsfield Interchange and the extension of O’Shea Road in Berwick, which would greatly benefit residents in the south east,” Mr Wood added.

This project will also include constructing a new separated road that connects Jacksons Road to Eastlink as well as a new signalised entry ramp to the freeway from Police Road.

Construction of the Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2 is expected to support up to 600 jobs, with most of the workers to be employed by local contractors and supported by local businesses.

The upgrade is being delivered by the State’s Major Road Projects Authority, and works are due to be completed in mid-2022.
