Works begin to make VIC's Suburban Rail Loop a reality

Works are getting underway to make Victoria’s Suburban Rail Loop project a reality, with the State Government getting on with detailed planning and investigations to jump start the stakeholder engagement process.

The stakeholder consultation will focus on the first stage of the project, the South East Section. Gathering of feedback from local communities, governments, peak bodies and key health, education and industry stakeholders is also expected to commence soon.

Initial site investigations are anticipated to begin later this year. A broad alignment as well as general precinct locations have already been identified, with specific station locations have yet to be finalised.

“The Suburban Rail loop will change the way we move around Melbourne forever, and we’re not wasting a minute getting this vital project started.

“It will create and support local jobs and slash travel times, getting people where they need to go,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Rail Projects Victoria will take the lead in design development, station location assessment and operational requirements. The team will engage with the Aurecon Jacobs Mott MacDonald Joint Venture (AJM) as technical adviser and KPMG as commercial adviser for the multi-billion dollar development.

The Suburban Rail Loop is a 90-kilometre underground rail network that will go around Melbourne’s suburbs. This development will also deliver up to 12 new stations that will connect major rail lines from the Frankston Line via Melbourne Airport to the Werribee Line.

“The Suburban Rail Loop will provide Victorians with better access to jobs, education and health services, wherever they live,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said.
