Works are set to ramp up on the third stage of the Melbourne Park Redevelopment and Lendlease has been contracted to manage the delivery of the project.

“We’re working with our project partners to deliver this major redevelopment and make the heart of our sport an entertainment precinct even better,” Minister for Priority Precints Gavin Jennings said.

The $271.55 million project will complete the redevelopment that will ensure Melbourne Park will remain as a world-class venue for sport and entertainment as well as guarantee the Australian Open will remain in Melbourne until at least 2036.

This project is anticipated to support up to 600 jobs which includes opportunities for Victorians through the State Government’s Local Jobs First policy.

“This major redevelopment at the heart of Melbourne’s sports and events will create thousands of jobs and bring tens of thousands of visitors to Victoria every year,” Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Marin Pakula said.

Stage 3 of the redevelopment is comprised of the central precinct and it will include:

  • The Upper Terrace including a new multipurpose 5,000-seat Show Court/Arena and match court
  • A new 1,000-seat Function and Media Centre including function rooms, pre-event spaces, interview rooms, a 200-seat auditorium and broadcast studios
  • A Broadcast Compound, which will be used as the Function Centre carpark year-round
  • A Central Logistics Hub including Central Kitchen and Central Loading Dock
  • Completion of the Front House public spaces and Back of House functions’ separation
  • Two new match courts - North Match Courts - in the north west court ladder

Early works on the project commenced in April of this year and it involved the demolition of the old function and media centre where a new centre is going to be built.

Once works have been completed, the new redeveloped Melbourne Park will be able to provide a better experience for both players and spectators. Media broadcasters will also benefit from the upgrade as it will give them a perfect vantage point during sporting or entertainment events.

“We’re making Melbourne Park an unrivalled venue for players, spectators and media broadcasters and we’re proud to play our part in making this a reality,” Mr Pakula said.

Stage 3 of the Melbourne Park Redevelopment is due to be completed before the 2023 Australian Open.
