A new world-class university is set to rise at the future Western Sydney Aerotropolis adjacent the Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek, with four universities signing on to develop the aerospace, engineering and science institution.
The University of Newcastle, University of NSW, University of Wollongong, and Western Sydney University will be collaborating to put up this new higher education facility that will be an Australian-first. The new institution is aimed to provide a specialised curriculum that will be centred on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to prepare the youth in Western Sydney for the jobs of tomorrow.
“The university project we have announced today is the first of its kind in Australia and the first new university built in Sydney in 50 years.
“It will be a world-class institution bringing together the best and brightest educators to develop our state’s future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians,”Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
Once completed, the Western Sydney Aerotropolis - a multi-billion dollar development to complement the upcoming Western Sydney Airport - is set to generate more than 12,000 smart jobs as well as educate over 10,000 students and provide more than 3,000 homes.
The Aerotropolis is going to be a hub for education and leading industries such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defence and agribusiness that will boost high-skilled jobs in the region.
Earlier this year, an Aerotropolis Investor Forum hosted by the Premier was held in Western Sydney which was attended by more than 250 international and local business leaders who are interested in securing a spot at the 10,000-hectare greenfield development site adjacent the future Western Sydney Airport.
“The NSW Government is working hard to create more jobs in every part of NSW and the Western Sydney Aerotropolis will create thousands of employment opportunities for young people.
“The jobs of tomorrow will rely heavily on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, so I applaud this great initiative. It will ensure students in Western Sydney have even greater access to world-class higher education,” the Premier said.
The first stage of the new university is set to open by 2026 together with the $5.3 billion Western Sydney Airport.
In August of this year, Celestino commenced work on the $5 billion Sydney Science Park at Luddenham as part of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis development.
