$131m Yan Yean Road Upgrade in VIC to boost local jobs

Yan Yean is going to see a boost in local jobs with the $131 million Yan Yean Road Upgrade Project that is being delivered by local workers as well as businesses while utilising local materials.

This multi-million dollar project applies the Victorian Government's Local Jobs First - Victorian Industry Participation Policy that requires a minimum of 95 per cent local content to ensure that local businesses get equal opportunities for work.

This project also applies the Major Project Skills Guarantee that ensures approximately 10 per cent of total work hours are carried out by apprentices, trainees and cadets.

“We made Local Jobs First the law to make sure local content requirements continue to boost economic activity and local jobs well into the future,” Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll said.

Stage 1 of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade Project will help slash congestion and deliver safer travels. Scope of works under this project include:

  • Removing dangerous road bends, including the bends at Howell Road and Sutherland Road
  • Widening the road from one to two lanes in each direction between Diamond Creek Road and Kurrak Road
  • Upgrading the intersections at Diamond Creek Road, River Avenue, Memorial Drive, Browns Lane, Kurrak Road and the Nillumbik Shire Council Recycling and Recovery Centre with optimised traffic lights and signalised pedestrian crossings
  • Adding a centre safety barrier to help prevent head-on crashes
  • Adding service lanes to provide safe access to residential properties
  • Building a new shared walking and cycling path along the full length of Yan Yean Road, on the west side
  • Building new footpaths along sections on the east side of the road

“The Yan Yean Road Upgrade won’t just improve traffic for locals - it’s giving apprentices the chance to get a start in their careers,” Member for Yan Yean Danielle Green said.

Last year, BMD Constructions was awarded the contract to design and build this project - which is expected to be completed by mid-2019.
