Major works on the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade are now underway. This follows the appointment of Symal to deliver the project in Wyndham Vale, Victoria.

This project involves:

  • Replacing the congested roundabout at Ballan Road, Greens Road, and McGrath Road north with a new traffic light intersection with additional lanes through the intersection to improve travel time and journey reliability
  • Adding new traffic lights at McGrath Road south near the 7-Eleven, making it safer and easier to turn right towards Werribee
  • Providing dedicated pedestrian crossings and shared walking and cycling paths, making it easier to move between homes, services, schools, and businesses
  • Introducing a new bus priority lane on Ballan Road to improve public transport reliability

“Just like other locals, I know how frustrating this roundabout is, so Labor is delivering a safer signalised intersection to improve traffic flow and make is safer for people travelling to schools, work and essential services,” Member for Werribee John Lister said.

Major works will begin with the demolition of the existing roundabout and installation of concrete safety barriers to safely separate traffic from the work zone. Meanwhile, a temporary roundabout and pavement will be installed to keep traffic moving while construction gets underway behind the barriers.

As construction activities move into the more significant stage 1 and 2 works, McGrath Road north will be closed at Ballan Road until late 2026. Signed detours via Ballan Road and Bolton Road will be in place, with motorists advised to allow an extra 20 minutes of travel time.

Throughout the construction stage, access to local shops will remain open although traffic movements will change as works progress. From early February, right turns from Ballan Road into the shop precincts north and south of Ballan Road will be removed to support safety and traffic flow.

In addition, a temporary signalised pedestrian crossing will be established on Ballan Road near the medical centre from 2 February. The existing school crossing on Ballan Road north of the roundabout will also be relocated further away from the construction area for safety reasons.

Two stops of the bus route 190 will be closed for the duration of the upgrade and commuters are encouraged to use alternative stops on Ballan Road near Buckingham Drive or Bolton Road.

Construction will ramp behind barriers on the northern side of Ballan Road through to late 2026 before shifting to the southern side of the intersection later this year.

The $83.5 million upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments on a 50:50 basis.

“Major works are underway on the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade, with the construction schedule carefully designed to keep traffic moving along this busy east to west route wherever possible.

“We know how important Ballan Road is for locals and freight, which is why we are staging works to minimise disruption while delivering a safer and more efficient intersection for the long term,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.
