Works to remove the Toorak Road level crossing in Kooyong, Victoria is one step closer with the $89 million contract to deliver the project awarded to the alliance between Laing O’Rourke, Jacobs and Metro.

“Awarding the contract is a significant step towards removing this major bottleneck which will slash travel times for tens of thousands of people every day to get them where they need to be safer and sooner,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said.

This project will include replacing the level crossing with a rail bridge over Toorak Road. This design will help ease congestion for motorists travelling to the Monash Freeway and CityLink through Toorak Road, Glenferrie Road and Tooronga Road.

The new rail bridge will also improve pedestrian and cycling connections as well as create community spaces that local can enjoy.

The design for the Toorak Road rail bridge was first announced in February of this year, and since then the project team has been engaging with residents, road, rail and bike users regarding urban design, open space, landscaping as well as pedestrian and cycling connections.

Resulting from community feedback, a new pedestrian crossing is going to be installed and it is going to be synchronised with the adjacent Monash Freeway intersection traffic lights to keep traffic in the area flowing.

Early works and site set-up is anticipated to commence in the coming weeks. The Toorak Road level crossing is set to be permanently gone by 2021.
