Construction has begun on a new disability housing and respite care facility in Adelaide. Uniting Communities – the project’s developer – will be incorporating 18 disability respite apartments to the 20-storey multi-use development on the corner of Franklin Street and Pitt Street in the CBD.

The new disability apartments will be able to provide a flexible and centrally located respite accommodation option for those who have disabilities as well as their families.

“We are ensuring that people with disabilities – whether physical or cognitive – can live independently in the heart of the city in accommodation that completely meets their needs.

“This project is unique in the scope of its offering, in that people can stay long term or short periods of respite or transition with appropriate support and the latest assistive technology,” said Minister for Disabilities Leesa Vlahos.

The multi-use hub is designed to a minimum five star green rating which is recognised by The Green Building Council of Australia. The building will also include a 50 kilowatt solar power system on the roof.

A $7.4 million investment has been committed by the State and Commonwealth Governments for this project.

“The Government is committed to working in partnership with the private sector to better support all members of our community with their housing needs, whether it is respite accommodation for people with disability or retirement living options in the city,” said Social Housing Minister Zoe Bettison

Up to 180 jobs will be created during the project’s construction phase as well as an additional 30 jobs once the development is complete.

The project is expected to be completed in 2018.
