Mondium - a joint venture between Monadelphous and Lycopodium - has awarded a $55 million contract to Kerman Contracting for works at Rio Tinto’s Western Turner Syncline 2 (WTS2) project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Under this new contract award, Kerman Contracting will undertake design, construction and commissioning of non-process infrastructure facilities and an explosives compound.

“We are excited about the opportunity to work with Mondium at the Western Turner Syncline 2 project and looking forward to building a strong and lasting business relationship with Mondium.

“This contract award builds on Kerman’s previous successful project outcomes in the Pilbara region in particular for Rio Tinto and other major mining companies. We are confident that our highly experienced team will deliver the WTS2 project to our Client’s full satisfaction,” Kerman Contracting Managing Director Chris Kerman said.

Works will include the delivery of a fixed plant workshop with amenities and office buildings, a heavy vehicle diesel storage and refueling facility together with two remote facility buildings featuring offices, ablutions and crib rooms. Kerman Contracting will also build an Ammonium Nitrate and Emulsion storage facility and explosives compound.

Kerman Contracting is anticipated to begin works in the second quarter of 2020.

In January, Rio Tinto awarded Mondium a $400 million contract for the design, procurement and construction of the WTS2 project. You can read more about it here.

The WTS2 project is located approximately 35 kilometres north west of Tom Price and this mine development is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs during its construction.

The $1 billion project will comprise of a new crusher and a 13-kilometre overland conveyor that will transport crushed ore from the mine to an existing transfer infrastructure. Once completed, the WTS2 will help sustain Rio Tinto’s production capacity of its iron ore operations in the Pilbara region.
